Winter Sports sunglasses offer a lightweight alternative to ski goggles, which some find too clunky. However, if you are looking for ski goggles, we recommend that you visit our 'Ski Goggles' page by clicking HERE.

Wrap-Around Sunglasses

Wrap-around frames are a popular choice for winter sports, and for good reason. These frames curve around your face, providing full coverage to block out wind, snow, and sunlight from the sides. This proves to be particularly important when you’re moving at pace or hitting sharp turns, where cold air and snow can get into your eyes. Wraparound frames ensure that your eyes are fully shielded from all angles, at all times.

Shield Sunglasses

Shield-shaped sunglasses are also an excellent choice due to their extensive coverage and enhanced performance benefits. The single, wide lens provides an expansive field of vision, therefore clear sightlines in all directions; a critical advantage when you're moving quickly down slopes or navigating tricky terrain. This design gives you the best peripheral vision possible as well as offering full protection against wind, snow, and debris.

The lens is the most important aspect of any sunglass, especially winter sports ones. Directly impacting your quality of vision, protection against sunlight and glare is crucial. The high altitude experiences when skiing and snowboarding means that you encounter harsher rays, which can increase glare significantly.

Different lenses are effective at dealing with different issues, so here is a breakdown of what to look for in a winter sport lens.

Polarisation

Polarisation is arguably the most famous and sought after lens option. While it is super-effective in reducing glare, it may not be the best choice for winter sports. Polarisation works by using a special filter to block any horizontal light rays (reflections) from entering the lens. This gives you crisper vision, but it can also distort depth perception, especially in snowy conditions. This means that it can make it difficult to spot icy patches, or sudden changes in terrain, which can be dangerous. As beneficial as polarisation is on everyday sunglasses, we would suggest giving it a miss on your winter sports frames.

Photochromic lenses are a better choice for winter sports. These lenses adjust automatically to changing light conditions, darkening in bright sunlight and lightening in lower light. This makes them perfect for the slopes, as the weather and light levels can change significantly when spending all day out there. They will adapt from the shaded areas of a mountain trail to the glaring brightness of an open slope, so you never have to worry about your vision.

Lens Tints

Now let’s talk tint colours. Brown and amber colours are particularly effective in increasing contrast and depth perception. This will help you spot bumps, texture changes and any obstacles as clear as day. This is especially beneficial in the snow, as everything can start to blend together, and obstructions can be hidden in the snow. Darker lenses such as a grey/smoke are better suited to strong sunlight as they have the lowest light transmission, whereas a lighter colour such as a yellow or gold are perfect for overcast days, where you need a softer lens.

Oakley Prizm Snow

Oakley Prizm technology is one of the best lenses on the market. Specially designed to enhance colour and contrast, Oakley have developed lenses specific to sports and environments. For winter sports we would suggest any Prizm Snow lens, as these are built to detect textures and obstacles, in icy and snowy conditions. We would recommend a darker lens like the Prizm Snow Black Iridium for sunny conditions, and a lighter lens such as the Prizm Snow Jade Iridium for more cloudy settings.
